I believe that life’s “aha” moments come to us when we least expect them.
For me, this blog was the result of one of life’s “aha” moments. It didn’t happen as a result of soul-searching or a major life event, but rather by surprise.
One Sunday evening I was settling down after a busy day with my family and turned on the television. A documentary was playing and it had caught my attention. The film was about how rapidly our planet is changing due to human activity, greenhouse gases, species extinction and acidification of the world’s oceans. Now, I’ve always had an interest in stories and news about climate change, and try to make environmentally healthier choices in my life, however this particular documentary shook me to my core. What was once portrayed as a future problem, this film made it very clear that we are accelerating the rate of extinction so much so that we are very likely now into Earth’s sixth mass extinction episode. All of this at a faster rate than our 4.5 billion year old history has ever witnessed.
Being the single largest threat to our planet, collective, worldwide changes need to happen. We don’t have a choice. However, we know that for change to happen it needs to start somewhere. That somewhere is within each and every one of us. We have the ability to work at a personal and local scale; and when like-minds come together, we can affect the regional and national scale; and when communities and countries come together, this, in turn can affect worldwide change.
For me, I come back to this blog. Why did I start it?
After watching that film on that Sunday evening, I had so many thoughts swirling around. It was so hard to clear my mind, I had to start writing. It was like someone hit the pause button on my life, then zoomed out and asked me:
…at the end of your lifetime, when you reflect on everything that happened, what have you left behind to help make the world a better place?
I kept thinking about my husband and my family and how being a mom is the most important job in the world. I can teach my daughter many things in life and help her achieve her goals, but what if I can also help others? Could this affect personal change? Local change? Community? National? Global?
Well it doesn’t hurt to dream big but it’s also best to start small. So here I am, authoring my very first blog, actually, one of my own goals as it is something I have wanted to do for a few years now. I wasn’t sure what I could write about that readers would find interesting. There’s so much out there online, what makes my blog different from the rest?
I want liveyourgoals.ca to be a place for you to find inspiration, empowerment and confidence to achieve your life goals.
Living in a small community in northern Ontario, I thought that by starting local, we can all learn from each other. Have you ever set a goal in your life and made it happen? Was it a small and simple goal, or a much larger more challenging one? Either way, I want to find those people who have achieved what they set out to achieve and tell their story.
Your path may be similar or different from those you read about here but the most important part is that you begin with one goal, and with your own reflections and the support of your friends and family, you can achieve that goal. I believe that when people have a goal they are working toward, it gives them purpose, hence my mantra for this blog: “Set Goals. Take Action. Live Purposefully.”
Coming back to that documentary, I felt a real sense of change in myself after zooming out and thinking deeply about my contribution to help make the world a better place. Whether you want to live a more environmentally-friendly lifestyle, learn a new skill, save enough for down payment on a house or become healthier, I hope this can be the start of something that gives you that same feeling. An inspiration to begin living your goals.
